Mebourne Pettys - September 2010

Calvin goes to a ball and is an extra in Neighbours, Ellen enters the mission field, we get robbed, school holidays and we stay in Janet’s place in Torquay.

It has been very wet this winter the wettest in eleven years they say. It has been nice really. I cycle to the Tram stop, it only takes five minutes and with all this rain I have only been caught out a few times. If it is heavy I just wait until it eases off then just ride home anyway.

On the third was the Regional Priest and Laurels ball at Braeside Stake Centre. Calvin doesn’t really like going to dances but made an effort to go to this one. They had spent a lot of money on the food and decorations. It was a James Bond theme and the hall was decorated like a Russian embassy. It was well done; Calvin enjoyed himself but wanted to leave early for a birthday party that he didn’t end up going into.

I enjoyed father’s day on the fifth, I got some screw drivers, chocolates and aftershave (I don’t think that is what it is called anymore). I gave Dad a call in New Zealand and got an update on the Christchurch earthquake. We had Mark Howe and his children over for dinner and a Family Home evening later in the day. Mark is back in Melbourne looking for a job.

A few weeks ago Bishop Foster made it clear to Calvin that he wanted him to attend Mutual. He knew he worked that night but wanted him to make a change. We told him that it was important to follow the direction of the Bishop and that he would be blessed if he did so. Calvin wasn’t exactly keen and took some time but he talked to his boss and told him he couldn’t work Tuesdays any more. He went to mutual for the first time in ages at the beginning of the month and the next day Vernice talked to the agent that the children used to go through for extra work and he said that he had a job for Calvin the next week for a day working on Neighbors and a couple of days during the school holidays. Calvin was pretty pleased about that.

When Vern and the gang came home from church on the twelfth Vern noticed that there were cupboards opened and he jewelry missing. At first she thought that the girls had just made a mess of her room put then they also found that her, Marion and Carmen’s wallets were also gone, we lost maybe one hundred dollars. There didn’t seem to be anything else missing but she called the police and they came over and did their thing. They didn’t take much so you could say that they are now looking for some petty thieves. Almost worth it to say that line. Max and Renee came over and gave us heaps of nice jeans, shirts and three pairs of really nice dress shoes. So we lost a little and gained a lot that day. A couple of days later a man came to the house to say that he had found the missing items behind his house minus the cash.

Ellen finally made it to the mission field on the fourteenth she is in Santee which is in San Diego.

Friday the seventeenth there was a farewell for Danielle and Chris Byers at the Blackburn Chapel. They are good friends of Ellen and Dylan so we all went along and had a good time although didn’t really know too many people since they are from another Stake. Nicolette Hettig came with us as she is staying with us while she is working at the show. She is Kaye and Aaron’s daughter from Gold Coast, Queensland our family stays at there place when they go up there.

Saturday the eighteenth we had a Stake Young Women’s activity down at the Dandenong Ranges. They did the Thousand steps walk to the top of the hill known as the Kokoda trail memorial walk. They had hired a bus but I went down in the car with Carmen. It was a cold overcast and sometimes drizzly day. I had not been there before and was surprised how popular the place was I had a hard time getting a car park. It is a nice walk and I think there are more than a thousand steps I came up the rear and I am glad I had to go slow because it was hard on the old pins and the next day our calves were very sore. At the top of the hill we had a little snack in one of the picnic huts and a testimony meeting that went very well. They got me to kick it off and then I asked Carmen to go next which she did. There was a breeze up there and we all got very cold so it was good to get back on the trail again and head down. There was a barbeque waiting for us at the bottom of the hill that tasted good. Everything tastes good outside. While we were taking a plate of sausages to the table a Kookaburra swooped down and knocked a couple off the plate it had no fear of us at all.

The next day I went with the family to Epping Ward to listen to Calvin and Vernice give their talks. They both did well, Calvin has a deep voice and talks very slowly. I got to sit with Carmen and Marion since President Dudfield was there, Austin was on the stand being the Bishops messenger.

I started two weeks holidays to correspond with the school holidays on the twentieth. Was I looking forward to that. I had made myself a list of things I needed to do around the house during the first week I slowly went through them with lots of breaks to play the Playstation and drive the children from one place to another. I worked on the back driveway putting down more bricks so it wouldn’t get muddy with all the rain we have been having. I played some golf with my friend Ron and took Carmen and Austin to see the Tim Burton exhibition in the city. On the way home we bought a new deck for Austin’s skate board as he has been getting into that lately.

Vern’s parents came down from Canberra on Saturday the twenty-fifth. Vern and I went with them to the Temple that evening we all headed down to Werribee for Kindle Howe’s baptism. He is Eldon’s sixteen year old son and they have never really attended church but since he has moved out of home he wanted to know more about the church and wanted to be baptised. It was a nice service and the Point Cook Ward seems to be very supportive.

On Wednesday afternoon on the twenty-ninth we headed down to Torquay to stay at Janet’s new place for a couple of days. It is nice and new just like staying at a motel. We all watched TV and Vern cooked us a nice meal. Janet hasn’t moved all her furniture in yet but it was still very nice.

The next morning was sunny and cool so I went for a walk down by the creek to the bay. It is a nice neighbourhood in an older part of the town. Old holiday batches between new expensive homes. Once I got everyone up we went to the Surf shops and Calvin bought some grip tape for his new deck. We then drove out to a small grass airstrip just down the road that you can go for rides in the bi planes. It was too expensive for everyone to go so just Austin and Carmen went up in an open cockpit plane for a spin for about a half hour up the coast to Ocean Grove. They both had to dress in the flight suits with leather jackets and helmets and they had a great time. Marion took Calvin in the other car to look for skate parks.

Calvin had to work that night so he headed back with Marion. The rest of us went for a drive down the coast and had a look around the lighthouse at Aireys Inlet. It was cool and overcast but no wind so that was a bit weird. For the last couple of months I have been taking photos of birds then looking up what they are on the internet. I was able to get a few more for my collection. We then went on to Lorne then over the Ottway Range and then back to Torquay.

Playing golf and bird watching, funny that my cool brother became you.
Not that you need my approval - besides I realized cool sucked years ago.
