Ray's Ravings

The big thing for me this month was finding out that I would have to re-wire the house as the old wiring has rubber covering and it has perished. Perish the thought!!

The electric power company that I deal with is upgrading our meters that a meter reader comes around every other month to read, to a meter that sends the reading at any time to the office. Well they have decided that my house needs rewiring. So, I had an electrician over to confirm this and quote the price for doing it at $6,000.00 or no electricity. Fortunately I have the money but not the desire to comply. What a rip off. Either the power of Kiwi money is useless or the trade is greedy.

But as far as I can see there isn’t much I can do about it as I am too much in the power of the power. I wonder if I am being took.

Another thing coming up is the change over to digital and this will also cost either another TV set or an upgrade on the old one with a fancier aerial.

Meanwhile petrol is going at $2.20 a litre or about $100.00 to fill up my tank on my wee car. The answer is either to die (and that will cost thousands) or shift to Lower Slabovia. You would need to be a millionaire to live instead of exist now.

The system is corrupt of course and maybe we are in the last days, or maybe it is me in the last days. Let’s hope so.

Sorry for the younger ones. Don’t even feel better after complaining about it all.

Rosemary tried to kill me the other day by getting me to walk 12 kilometres. There is this older road that parallels the part of the main road on the way to Rotorua at Fitzgerald Glade and we parked the car at one end and walked to the other and back. Then drove the car to Café that is there and also measure the distance we had gone and had a little refreshment.

The other thing that is more pleasant to report was our day in the ecological fenced in part of our local mountain that is trying to bring back some of the native birds that are on the edge of extinction

I will let Rosemary tell you all about that.

We have had other little adventures, just happenings by chance and life on a comparative basis has been good to us as usual.

We hope all is well with the rest of you and so, so much for the month of April 2012.

The old man.

I am sorry for you and for Rosemary that you have to get your electricity re-done! We have a similar repair coming up-- our air-conditioner, which is a lot easier to live without than electricity! What would you do then? Sit in a darkened room and contemplate ... what? The life, the universe, and everything? Our air conditioning unit is going to cost $5,000 to $7,000 and it has been on the fritz for three years now. Every one of the technicians come out, shake their heads, and say that it shouldn't have lasted this long! They do a quick fix for $200 with no guarantees and they've done this two years in a row! And it's worked! And it's going on the third year of beyond death and we're blessed with still receiving air-conditioning! It really is too hot to live without it, although you can with a lot of fans going. We did it for years in all of the old houses we lived in, the first 12 years of our marriage, so I guess we can live through that again! (We plan on paying it with tax returns, we're due $5,000 from the government).
