Melbourne Pettys

New Years in Licola, Vern picks up the children in Canberra, Elder Cook comes to visit had a Stake Picnic and Marion turned Twenty.

Vern and I were up at five thirty and on the road just after six back to Licola. I had to have a couple of power naps along the way but we got there just before ten when church started. There was about three hundred and fifty YSA at the convention so we spilt up the Sunday class into several groups and I taught one of those groups. It was a very warm day but it cooled of nicely in the evening. After the fireside President Duffield headed back to Melbourne leaving me holding the fort. The next day was clean up and back on the buses and into the cars by about eleven in the morning. It turned out to be a hot day over forty degrees. Lucky the air conditioning in the car works well since we were back and forth to the airport again after we got back.

Corin and Ab Mora stayed at our place Tuesday night of the third since they were between apartments and it was their apartment Calvin and Marion where looking after. The joined us for dinner with the missionaries and then we had a nice chat afterwards. They are a young couple from Whakatane and interestingly Corin only spoke Maori until she was about ten years old.

Vern drove back to Canberra on the fourth to pick up Austin and Carmen and came back on Saturday. It was good to have them back. Carmen went straight down to Video Ezy and started training to take over from Calvin, she is pretty happy to be working. I wish I was that happy to be working.

I played golf with Ron Cooper and some of his family on the fourteenth. I haven’t played in ages and I was terrible on the first nine and thought to myself why did I bother to come and I won’t be doing this again. Then I did well on the second nine so I was thinking I should buy some new clubs and get into it again.

On the weekend starting on the twenty second we had Elder Cook of the Twelve, Elder Callister of the Presidency of the Seventy, Bishop McMullin of the presiding bishopric, and Elder Watson and Hemula from the Area Presidency come to Melbourne.

We had a leadership meeting on Saturday morning and got to shake their hands then there were two meetings on that night. One for Ward and Stake Councils and another one at our Stake Centre for perspective missionaries 16ys and older. Since President Dudfield was required at the other meeting I had to conduct the perspective missionary one with Elder Callister, Bishop McMullin and Elder Watson. There was a dinner for these general authorises before hand that Vern and I had to go to with the Tempany’s and that was a little tense for me with all the big bosses about. I found it easier conducting the meeting. It was a great meeting and they and their wives were lovely.

The next day all the General Authorities spilt up and when to different Stakes for special early morning Stake Conferences (8am – 9.30am). They were early because had to catch their planes. We were very lucky to have Elder and Sister Cook come to our Stake. Vernice conducted the music so got to shake his hand as well. He was so nice and came in through the Rec Hall so he could shake hands with some of the members.

Since we finished so early Vernice invited all the Seminary students over to the house for lunch and we had a nice visit.

Australia Day and the start of two weeks holidays for me. I like going on holidays when everyone else is going back to work. We had a nice day on Thursday with the Stake Picnic at the Park over the road from the Stake Centre. There were heaps of children there and they had a great time playing soccer and volleyball. I got my white legs out and did my best to keep them that way.

On Saturday we headed down the beach with the Judds, Williams and the Nicholles. I went snorkeling with Bishop Williams and we spotted a few fish. Calvin and Austin had a go surfing and managed not to break their noses.

Marion turned twenty and she got some shoes and Janet and Johnny came around for the party. Half our children aren’t teenagers anymore, time flies.
