Melbourne Pettys - September 2011

Tricky dies, Rugby World Cup, visited Licola, youth camps get washed out and we get a new TV.

NP; At the beginning of the month our cat Tricky died. He went missing early in the week then on Saturday the third Carmen spotted him on the side of the road on the corner of Spring St and Taylor Ave. He had been dead for some time because when I went to get him he was a bit smelly. I thought I would never say this but I do miss him not being there when I go out in the back yard.

Vern and I went to a baptismal service the on Friday the ninth for four converts. We decided to go along to support these new members and the missionaries in that ward that we have regularly around to or home for dinner. We were very glad we went since it was a lovely service. After they were baptized they were given the opportunity to bear there testimonies. You could see that they were very nervous and they were told that if they didn’t want to then they didn’t have to. However they all got up and each gave simple testimonies of how they met the missionaries and gained a testimony of Jesus Christ and the church.

The next day we went over to Bro Teponga’s place for an Umu. He had invited all the High Priests over so there were a few there. I played darts with Walter Fulmizi and Brother Brooks and Vernice sang for us.

VP; There are a few more missionaries going out now and with Taylor Tucci going to Portugal and Louis Smith on to temple square and also Jules Watson going to San Francisco it's all a buzz with missionary excitement. We have been busy as usual with school seminary and church. Aunty Ena and Elke came down from Albury to pick up her fiancé Tony as he had been in hospital for a bit and it's always nice having her visit.

We all watched the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup and were very impressed with the show and had to watch the game the next day between Tonga and NZ as we had the baptism of four Chinese sisters in our ward which was such a lovely service. I have the RWC result and update site on my phone so I was able to keep updated on the scores. We also love watching the coverage of all the other games as well. Elder Petty being right in the heart of it since Mt Eden is part of his area.

I got a call from Darilyn Galanos on the off chance that I didn't have a gig on that night. She wanted to know if I could help her out as their headline act who was an indigenous singer/songwriter had cancelled for an East Timor Fundraiser event she was doing. She is very involved in volunteer work over there and helps out in their plight quite often. Anyway she wondered if I would fill in. I was free so I agreed to help and I'm glad I did it was a real relaxed atmosphere and very worth while as the Fundraiser was for helping women in their communities. I'm glad I had the opportunity to do it felt great to be there.

We actually have five sets of missionaries in our ward now as the Vietnamese elders are moving in from the Footscray area and seeing as they are language missionaries and only one set of English missionaries. I like to feed them as not everyone in this ward has the missionaries over and especially not the language missionaries. I really believe it's great to have them in our home as it helps keep the spirit of missionary work alive in your home and also helps us get to know them and have them teach our friends. It's a difficult task in our home trying to find time to have them over when we're all here and so the only time is Tuesdays at 5.30pm which is when Dad gets home and before mutual and it all seems to be working out alright. We have them fortnightly.

NP; We had the four new convert Chinese girls come over for dinner Tuesday the twentieth. They were great and bought us presents, chocolates, flowers and a tea pot and one cup. The tea pot is a classic, very fancy and it went straight to the laundry about the sink.

Calvin went down to the Priests and Laurels’ ball in Deer Park on the twenty third. He wasn’t going to go but Caroline O’Grady, Danielle’s auntie who has just moved back from Singapore rang to ask if he was going. Her cute daughter Nicola was going and wanted to know if he would be there. Calvin sacrificed himself and did the right thing and went.

The next day Vern and I went with the Dudfields up to the small town of Licola in the Highlands. We needed to check out a holiday park there where the YSA are having their convention over new years. It is a three hour drive to get there but it is a very nice place very neat a tidy and clean.

The last week of the month was the start of the school holidays. The Stake youth camps were on, at least that was the plan. Vern took Calvin and Austin up to Riddles Creek for their camp on Tuesday the twenty seventh. It was a nice warm day but the next day there was very high winds and around lunch time it turn dark and there was a thunder storm and heavy rain and it turned out to be the wettest September day in fifty years. Since the forecast was for heavy rain for the rest of the week President Dudfield cancelled both camps. I got the news on when I was on the way home on Wednesday evening after arranging to have the next two days off. I was going to pick up the boys and had just got pasted the airport when I was told that they didn’t need to be picked up. I turned around and was just pulling into the driveway at home when I go another call to say that they did need to get picked up so back I went again. It was about eight at night at that point but they were both fine and had a good time despite the weather. It was just as well the camps were called off because the rest of the week was very wet and very cold.

Since I had the time off work I rang the Gas man to have a look at the heater in the living room. It had smelt of gas when you first turned it on. He said that it was pasted it and was unsafe so he closed it down. He was surprised that we weren’t all suffering headaches since it was pumping out carbon monoxide. Until we get it replaced we will be living in a cold house. I hate cold houses, lucky summer is coming.

We bought a new TV for the back room and mounted it on the wall on a moveable bracket. It gives us more room and is great for playing games. I had to change the door Carmen’s room from a sliding door to a normal door so it could fit. I also cut down the tree with the pink flowers outside the laundry window to lighten the back room the laundry up.
