Mebourne Pettys - August 2010

Dylan arrives in the mission field and turns twenty, Vern and I get political.

The first of the month was Sunday and Mahli the children’s cousin wanted to go to church so Marion went and picked her and her brother Deshon up and took them to Meadow Heights Ward then brought them over for dinner. It was nice to have them over they are nice. Later that week we had Vern’s dad, Larry, Ezra, Nei, Auntie Ena and Elke stay over on the same night. Mark has moved back down from Newcastle so Larry and Vern’s dad drove the truck down. Ezra and Nei came down for a wedding and Auntie Ena and Elke flew out to New Zealand for a holiday. No one visits for months then they all happen to come on the same night.

On Saturday the seventh Vern hosted a baby shower for Eldon and Maureen’s daughter Krishna. That sent me out to the shed and then down to watch Austin’s basketball game. That afternoon after dropping Marion off at work I dropped by the Family History Centre for the open day.

Vern dropped her phone, this is not an uncommon event however she had it in her pocket and had just flushed the toilet then, drop, plop and gone. When she rang me on Dylan’s old phone to tell me what had happened I can’t say I was that surprised. These days she only buys the fifty dollar jobs from the Post Office because the more expensive ones she has had in the past have all just stopped working for unknown reasons.

We have had a few emails from Ellen and Dylan since they have been gone. Dylan’s have been very short just one line or one word. It is good that he is so busy. He is now in the Mission field so is really doing it. Ellen doesn’t go into the field until mid next month. She is working hard on Spanish and also seems very busy.

We had a Stake Priest and Laurel Stake Missionary day on the fourteenth. Calvin came along. In the Morning they did some training then after lunch they split off with the Missionaries in the Stake. Calvin rang one of his friends that lives in the area and they met him at the Station and had a gospel discussion.

The next day was a busy one for me, I am not complaining, I have no problem with having a full Sunday at all, I would just like to record it for an example. Sundays are not all this busy but is not uncommon. It started with the Stake Disciplinary Council at six fifteen in the morning. When that finished as a Stake Presidency we met with the Tsui family and invited them to attend the Fairfield Ward on an assignment. I then drove to Eltham Ward and attended Sacrament meeting and did some Stake Business from the stand. During Sunday school I met with our Stake Seminary Supervisor who lives in the Ward. I then had my bi monthly interview with the Elders Quorum president and attended Elders Quorum. Some of them aren’t dressing too well for church so President Dudfield asked me to address that, which I did. After church I did a temple recommend interview then drove to Meadow Heights Ward to meet with the Stake Young Women’s presidency I also did five more temple recommend interviews and a bi monthly interview with one of the High Councilmen. I headed home about four and then Austin and I went around to a Sister that I home teach that wanted to see me. No fireside that night so I had a nice evening with the family.

Monday the sixteenth was the first day that our new payroll and personnel system at Australia Post SAP –MPS came up for us to get into. It has been a very busy couple of months for me at work in preparation and now I have a new system to learn and get reports out of. It was an interesting and busy week as I worked my way around the system. Janet is in the same boat since she will support it from the pays point of view. It’s going to take some getting used to.

Saturday the twenty first was the national Election Day. Ivan Stratov a member from Fairfield Ward that we have known for many years got himself nominated as the Family First candidate for the seat just north of us. It is a very small party that only has one guy in the senate but Ivan wanted to make a stand over some issues so put his hand up although he had no hope of winning. He asked me to hand out how to vote fliers at one of the polling locations for a few hours so Vern came along and that is what we did. It was a very cold but mostly sunny day, what was interesting to me was how good natured the other volunteers were as we all stood there in the cold and joked among ourselves. I thought how lucky we are in Australia, in other countries they would be shooting at each other, here it’s more like a sports event.

We finished around lunch time then went down and voted ourselves. Vern was picked up to go to Shepparton to sing at the wedding out there. Since it was late by the time they finished they stayed the night and came back early the next day.
