Melbourne

Melbourne Cup holiday, Ces and family drop by, Calvin turns 16, Marion finishes High School, and I moved into a new building at work.

The first Tuesday of November is a public holiday for the Melbourne Cup horse race. Almost everyone also has the Monday off as well. I wasn’t one of those people but the rest of the family headed for the beach and had a good time. That evening we went up to the Judd’s place for family home evening and had a nice visit with their seven children. Once I got everyone out of bed on the Tuesday we headed down to the golf practise field in Coburg. Since Dylan’s job is building a course he thought he would have a go at playing. I spent a bit of time going through the basics and they all had a hit. Vernice did the best, hitting the ball cleanly almost every time. As we were walking back to the Kombi Carmen was in the lead and spotted a large snake by the path. It was a Brown Snake, about one and a half metres. I checked the internet later and apparently they are very poisonous. Dylan headed back to Western Australia the early the next day. It was nice to have him around he always lightens the mood.

Our stake hosted a tri-stake youth activity on the sixth, we decided to hire out the roller skating rink in Sunshine. It was Carmen’s first activity and Marion’s last. Both had a good time. While we were there President Dudfield let me have a drive in his new Audi A3 that he is using for work, it was very fast.

Ces McQueen rang me Tuesday evening at the end of our Young Women’s excellence night that Marion and Carmen were involved in. Marion was one of the MCs and did a great job; she makes funny comments when things don’t go to plan. Anyway he Lana and their youngest Vay were in transit from WA and had to stay the night before their flight in the morning. Dylan had mentioned they may call me so we were prepared. I went and picked them up to stay at out place. It was good to see Ces again and we had a really nice visit with them. Their little boy seems to be a nice kid and he liked all the other kids around.

On the thirteenth was Calvin’s sixteenth birthday. It was also my last day in the old Australia Post building at 321 Exhibition Street. Since we had packed up all our gear we couldn’t do much work so we went home after lunch. That evening we had a few people our for Calvin’s birthday, Eldon did the barbeque, the Judds and Shelly White also came. We just gave him money and he was happy with that. On the Sunday I ordained him a Priest and the next Sunday I was also there to hear him bless the sacrament for the first time, he did pretty well.

On the sixteenth was Marion’s last exam for High School and she was pretty happy since she has been working hard these past few weeks. That day was also my first day in the new Australia Post HQ building at 111 Bourke St. It is a brand new building and Post is the sole occupant of all twenty floors. I am on the second floor by the window on the Bourke St side. It is very flash inside and closer to the centre of town and my tram line so I am happy. Ten years ago we moved out of a building on the next block so for me it has a feeling of Dejavu. Marion and Ellen came into town and I showed then around the new building and we had lunch.

On the twenty second we all went down to Wantirna to the Multi- Stake Seminary graduation. Marion graduated and had to conduct the music as well, the place was packed and Marion and Ellen had a great time catching up with their friends from all over Melbourne. We very rarely go as family all together anywhere these days but the next day we all went down to a Music concert at the High School to hear Carmen play the violin and the day after that we all went to Flemington Race Course to Marion’s School Graduation. Marion received a book for a sports prize. It’s a very nice venue and there was a good supper afterwards.

On the last Thursday of the month Marion had her Formal. That is what the Americans would call a Prom. She was trying to arrange a nice car for her and her friends to go in but things didn’t work out. I offered her the Kombi as a joke some time ago and that is what she ended up going in. She could have gone in the little car but her friends thought it would be fun in the Kombi. I am not sure Marion thought it was fun but she doesn’t let things like that get her down, it fact I don’t think she lets anything get her down. The only time I have seen her upset is went the other day I tipped out a strawberry ice-cream topping she had being making because I thought it was leftovers. She really got stuck into me about that. Of course they all get mad at me for throwing things out that I find lying around the house. I am just trying to tidy up and all I get is grief.
