January 2014
Chase came to stay,Carmen got her licence, Austin got a job,
Vern, Carmen and Austin go to Sydney and Canberra, Chase comes to stay, Jake and
Pahnia come to visit, Vern put on a Stake Polynesian show.
New Years found Vern and I at
Melbourne University doing our shift at the YSA convention. We pulled the late
shift and were walking around until eight in the morning and then we headed
home for a sleep. Dylan woke us up at lunchtime to tell us that there were a
bunch of interstate YSA that they were bringing home to wait for their flights
home, there were about ten of them. Vern whipped up a lovely lunch for them all
and then Vern and I headed to the movies to see ‘The Secret Life of Walter
Mitty’, which we enjoyed.
Chase McFarland is staying with us for a while. Ellen met him at the MTC
and her and Dylan stayed with him when they went to the States. On the second I
took him, Austin, Rebecca and Norelle out to South Morang to find some
kangaroos. We saw plenty and he even chased some (get it?). We hardly saw the
children for the rest of the week since they were heading off to some place or
the other and not getting back until the small hours of the morning. I did some
painting and jobs around the house and of course got a few hours of PlayStation
in.
On the sixth I went back to work, some people look forward to going back
to work, I unfortunately am not one of them. I shouldn't complain I have a good
job but it is a job or they wouldn't pay me to do it.
Carmen got her driving licence on Wednesday on the first go. Everyone
including Carmen are now referring to the Mazda as 'Carmen's car', however I
still call it the Mazda. She drove over on her own to see Jacinta that
afternoon.
Austin got a job at KFC, Bell Street, Preston; he had his first shift on
the ninth. So although Carmen drove herself to work herself for the first time
that day I still had to get off my butt and go and pick up Austin. At least I
don't have to wait around for him since he comes out as soon as his shift is
finished.
The next day Mum, Carmen and Austin drove up to Sydney. They stayed in
Jordan Reti's apartment on Manly beach. Mum met her friends there and went to a
concert that evening. From there they will spend a few days in Canberra.
Kiriwai got her mission call this week to the Japan, Tokyo mission.
Glen and Dylan decided to go spear fishing on Saturday the eleventh so I
went with Dylan to buy some spears and flashlights since you go out in the
dark. A whole bunch of them ended up going and I think they scared off all the
fish. I spent the day copying our home movies onto the computer and went for a
walk up Edgar’s creek in Coburg.
We hadn’t heard from Calvin
for three weeks so Vern was getting a little jumpy. I said he was probably on
an island and couldn't get to e-mail but that wasn't going to cut it so she
asked me to e-mail the Mission Home to see what was what. They confirmed what I
thought and will only be able to get to emails on Zone Conference.
Friday evening of the
seventieth was the reception for Sam Tempany and Louise Smith. It had been hot
all day but cooled down just in time. It was at the Willows in St Kilda which
was small but flash. The Dudfields were on our table so I had someone to talk
too.
TW rang and came to church on
the nineteenth. He said he wants to come back. Of course Jacob and Pahnia were
also there so that was quite a collection of cousins.
It was nice to have Jake and
Pahnia with us, Austin took them into the city a few times and Carmen took them
to the Meurs place to see how the other half live. Dylan made an effort to come
home after work to spend some time with them and some time playing Age of
Empires with Chase.
On Friday the twenty-fourth
evening Vern and I met the Tempany's at the Dudfield's place for a meal and a
chin wag. I was nice to catch up and give Waka a hard time.
Early the next morning I
dragged Pahnia and Carmen up to Kinglake looking for Lyre birds. I am pretty
sure we heard one but didn't see it. All was not lost though because on the way
out Carmen spotted two Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoos which I haven't seen before
and are the largest Australian parrots. We were all pretty excited about that,
some more than others.
That afternoon we headed down
to Albert Park for Eva's 1st Birthday party. Dylan got hold of my camera and
took a heap of pictures. I took Austin to work at KFC and then met them at the
Tempany's place for Andy's farewell. Carmen stayed on with "her car"
when Vern, Pahnia, Jake and I headed home. Later she went out to airport to
welcome Isaac back from France. Then Sunday morning her and Austin pick him up
and took him to Caulfield Ward to surprise Andy.
The Australia day holiday was on the twenty-seventh, since it was going to be over thirty so we decided to head down the beach. A few other families came along as well and a bunch of the kids friends also turned up so it was quite a group. We took Chase out for a surfing lesson and he was hooked and was out for ages. It was hot and the sand burned but it was great in the water.
The last couple of weeks in
the month was taken up with preparations and practices for the Stake Polynesian
night at the Stake Centre. Vern was the director
and was run off her feet and
didn’t get back home until after midnight most nights. All the children were
involved and Rebecca is right in there with them. They performed in most of the
items. It was all worth it though because it was a great night they all did a
great job. Carmen was up the front for most of items and is a natural dancer. Dylan
and Austin made good Maoris and all the Chinese girls wanted their photos taken
with Ellen in her costume. There must have been close to five hundred people
there and lots of non-members, Vern had about 40 friend of hers there. I took
Vern straight from there to the airport to catch her flight to Auckland. She is
there
until Wednesday for Kylie's unveiling.
