Melboure Pettys

Carmen goes on a YW camp, Lorza stays with us, Vern sings a lot, Christmas in Canberra and New Years in Licola.

The first weekend on the month Carmen went on the Young Women’s camp. The weather was great and they had it is Wonga Park. Mum, Austin and I took her out. Austin wasn’t keen hanging around, too many girls. Carmen had a great time and we had good reports on how she conducted herself.

Very early Monday morning of the fifth Vernice and Marion picked up Lorza Naidu from Fiji who will be staying with us for a few weeks while she gets medical treatment on her eyes here in Melbourne that the Church has arranged. We put our hand up to look after her since we are close to the hospital. I was expecting an old lady but she is a tiny twenty year old and is lovely. She stayed with us for a couple of weeks until she had her eye operation then went up to Brisbane to visit her Uncle.

On Tuesday the sixth Vern and I went to an end of year dinner for the Sisters and Misters movers and shakers. Not something I was looking forward to however they are a nice bunch and it wasn’t too bad.

Our Stake hosted a Single Adult activity on the tenth. It was a sit down dinner that we got catering for and Vernice did some entertainment and was very good and as usual everyone thought she was great. It was a lot of work but they seemed to really appreciate it and when we asked them to help pack up they all pitched in.

Worked again at the airport this Monday in my high vis vest opening mail bags and putting stickers on parcels like a real worker.

Vern wasn’t working on Thursday the fifteenth so was able to come with Austin, Carmen and I to the Temple to do baptisms, it was nice to have her along. Then Friday night she did her gig at the RSL in Preston and we had all the Howes come along for dinner and the show. Afterwards I took Calvin up to Abe Mora’s apartment in Bell City. He and his wife are away for a few weeks and asked us to watch their apartment. The apartment on the seventieth floor which is the top and has great views of the city. Calvin and Marion are doing to stay there and pretend to be rich.

Gwyneth invited us over for a Barbeque in the week before Christmas which was nice. Glyn was there also. Calvin and Marion came straight from work, they are both packing school books at the moment.

We decided to travel to Canberra for Christmas this year to spend some time with Vernice’s parents. Since we couldn’t all fit in the car Carmen flew up a few days earlier so we opened our presents before we left. The rest of us drove up on Christmas spent the night at Nana and Grandpa then went to church on Christmas day and spent the time with the family. It was fun we talked to our children on their missions, two for us and three Abels. That evening we stayed and Courtney and Larry’s place. The next day it was back to Nana and Grandpa’s place to Skype Ellen then Janet and Johnny came over for a visit since they were up from the coast to catch a plane back to Melbourne. That evening it was back to Larry and Courtney’s place, we played Xbox with him and then Carmen and I watched Modern Family episodes.

Headed home on the twenty seventh and left Austin and Carmen in Canberra. It was a hot day and when we stopped at Gundagai for lunch the place was packed.

Since our Stake is near the Airport we had the assignment to billet those coming from interstate to the YSA convention at Licola. We had ten stay at our place so on Wednesday the twenty-eight Marion and I were going back and forth to the Airport picking people up. The ones that came early in the day I gave them a map and put them on the tram and sent them into the city for a look around. Calvin and Marion were still looking after the apartment so that made more room.

The next day Marion and I ferried the YSA at the Parrish’s place to Epping to catch the bus them the group at our place down to Fairfield to catch it there. An interesting group of people from Tasmania, Port Augusta, Sydney and Brisbane. Vern and I then got our stuff together and drove up. It was a beautiful day and it took us almost four hours to get there and it is a lovely spot in highlands. After dinner there were different activities. Vern when to a music workshop, at least she was asked to help. I went with about a hundred for the YSA on a hike. I don’t think any of us realised how far or how high we were going. I took the tail end position with another advisor couple and it was slow going, some of those sisters shouldn’t have come. It was almost dark at the top of the hill, the views in the twilight were lovely but it was a long way home and we were in total darkness half way down the hill. It was very steep and the long grass once flattened was very slippery. Myself and another YSA had to almost carry one girl down the hill since her shoes had no grip. We all got back after almost three hours and my legs were sore for three days.

The next day Vern and I helped out on the flying fox. My job was to unbuckle them once they came down. We did that all morning as the heat started to rise. In the afternoon we looked are the trampolines, that was nice since we could sit together in the shade. That evening there was games and movie and a dance.

New Years Eve after breakfast Marion and Calvin arrived and were happy that they got there safely, Marion said she had a great time on the winding roads. Vern and I then drove back to Melbourne as she had to sing that night with her band. I stayed home and got some rest since we had to get up early the next day to drive back so I could teach a Sunday school lesson.
